July Updates

At some point in the year, I find myself switching from “the year just started” to “the year is almost over.” It usually happens once grapes, figs, blackberries, and shelling beans grace the market. These late summer crops sneak up on me every year in the happiest way, even if I never feel quite prepared for them. I suppose it’s still midsummer in the Bay Area, but these crops are the last new summer crops to arrive before pomegranates and apples appear in the fall. It also means it’s time to start thinking about the holiday menus (yes, really).

Greens hosted Francis Ang on July 18th for a whirlwind evening full of California Filipino delights. Our kitchen always loves welcoming new folks into the Greens kitchen; it’s a learning opportunity for all of us, plus it breaks up the monotony of our daily routines. We’re now gearing up for our wine dinner with Bedrock Winery on August 1st. I better get to writing that menu too!

Some things I’m into right now:

  • watermelon - as a snack & agua fresca

  • edible flowers for a dainty touch

  • tomato gardens

  • evening walks

  • open windows & Bay Area “summer” breeze

  • my kitty Genji & his new 10-week-old baby brother Winston

xx, Katie
